Château Malescot Saint Exupery - Margaux 1995

Un hiver à nouveau doux et très pluvieux (notamment en janvier) - Eté beau et chaud qui permet une excellente vendange qui s'effectue elle aussi au soleil.

This is the finest wine produced at Malescot-St.-Exupery since the great 1961. It is opaque purple-colored, with a fragrant, black cherry aroma intertwined with high quality toasty oak and spice. This medium-bodied, highly-extracted yet well-focused and delineated wine is beautifully made. It is a potential candidate for 15-20 years of cellaring. Impressive! Last tasted 1/97

This wine may merit an outstanding rating. It offers a classic Margaux combination of elegance and richness. Medium-bodied, with delicate, beautifully ripe, black currant and floral aromas that compete with subtle new oak, the 1995 Malescot hits the palate with a lovely concoction of fruit, nicely integrated tannin and acidity, and a stylish, graceful feel. This quintessentially elegant Bordeaux should continue to improve in the bottle. A beauty! Anticipated maturity: 2002-2018.

Extremely well-made. Beautifully aromatic, with nutmeg and berry aromas. Medium- to full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins. Coffee, vanilla and fruit on the aftertaste. Best after 2001.

This well-placed Margaux estate has turned things around as evidenced by the tasting notes for the 1993-95 vintages. This is the finest wine produced at Malescot-St.-Exupery since the great 1961. I can unequivocally say that the 1994 and 1995 offerings are the two most impressive back to back efforts I have ever tasted from Malescot St.-Exupery. This estate is capable of making some knock-out wines, as anyone who has tasted the 1961 is aware. The 1995 may turn out even better than the 1994. The color is a black/purple, and the captivating nose offers a lavish display of sweet, jammy black plums and currants intermixed with new oak and scents of underbrush. With low acid, as well as surprising denseness and richness, this opulent (even voluptuous) wine possesses layers of fruit, a deep, long, heady finish, and outstanding concentration. If this estate does not excessively fine and filter it, this should turn out to be one of the sleepers of the vintage, as well as the finest Malescot St.-Exupery since the superb 1961. Although it will be drinkable young, it should be given 5-6 years of cellaring; it will keep for two decades. Impressive!
