Elegant and soft, with admirable restraint as well as subtlety, yet surprising richness and seductiveness, the 1998 offers pure notes of strawberries and black cherries gently infused with high quality toasty oak. Round, medium-bodied, and well-balanced, it can be drunk now and over the next 12-14 years.

A big, Porty, raisiny wine. Very ripe plum and hints of mineral and spice on the nose. Full-bodied, thick and rich, with big, silky tannins. Slightly hot finish. Rather rustic but impressive. Best after 2006. 6,665 cases made.

One of the finest wines produced at La Gaffeliere in many years, this dense ruby/purple-colored 1998 possesses silky, sweet, plum, black cherry, and toasty aromatics and flavors, medium body, prominent but sweet tannin, and a nicely-layered, structured finish with lots of muscle and power. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018.

Consistently among the most elegant, stylish wines of St.-Emilion, La Gaffeliere has beefed up its mid-palate, which is concentrated and sweet. The stylish, savory 1998 exhibits a dark ruby color with purple nuances. The complex nose of berry fruit, dried herbs, new saddle leather and toast is followed by a medium-bodied wine with a sweet mid-palate, excellent concentration and purity, as well as a classically balanced, finesse-styled finish. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2014.
