The 2016 La Fleur-Petrus has a wonderful, beautifully defined bouquet of detailed blackberry, briar, truffle and ferrous scents that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. There is a gracefulness about this Pomerol that belies the persistence and sapidity that keep you coming back for more. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Sweet and just a little simple. Chewy, dry end. But actually pretty juicy and pleasing. Leathery tannins. Drink 2024-2037

The 2016 Château La Fleur Petrus is more regal and elegant, with an incredibly floral quality in its red and blue fruits, crushed rock, forest floor, and graphite-tinged aromas and flavors. This medium to full-bodied, rich, layered effort has notable structure, integrated acidity, beautiful balance, and a rock star finish. This is pure class and a thrilling La Fleur Petrus that needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will cruise for 2-3 decades.

Ripe and warm in feel, with an alluring mix of creamy textured cherry, red currant and raspberry reduction notes, mixed with black tea and incense accents. Features a buried spine of graphite, with a hint of Turkish coffee lurking at the very end. Best from 2022 through 2036. 3,100 cases made.  –JM

Wow. The blackberry, dried-flower and orange-peel aromas are so impressive at first, but then they go to black truffle and wet earth. Full-bodied with a solid core of powerful yet fine-grained tannins. It goes on for minutes. A very muscular La Fleur-Pétrus. Drink after 2025.

The 2016 La Fleur-Pétrus has a straitlaced, conservative bouquet at first, but it gradually opens up with aeration to reveal blackberry and bilberry aromas and hints of crushed stone and rose petal. The palate is smooth and supple, with an almost citrus-like freshness. This is an energetic, joyful La Fleur-Pétrus, fanning out beautifully toward the sensual, slightly tart finish. It shows signs of melioration in barrel, and though I feel that the 2015 is better, it's still a damn good Pomerol.

The 2016 La Fleur-Pétrus soars out of the glass with striking aromatics. Light on its feet yet also quite fleshy, the 2016 has so much to offer. Blood orange and floral notes add brightness to the red-toned fruit in this silky, beautifully nuanced Pomerol. The 2 is rich, dense and spectacularly beautiful, with a persistent, saline-drenched finish that makes it hard to resist a second taste.

Blended of 91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, the medium garnet-purple colored 2016 la Fleur-Petrus reveals stunning Black Forest cake, redcurrant jelly and wilted roses scents with underlying suggestions of pencil shavings, yeast extract, dark chocolate and cloves. Medium to full-bodied, the mid-palate possesses superb intensity and depth with layers of perfumed black fruits and loads of red fruit sparks framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing on a lingering earthy note.

The upfront brambly fruit is sensuous and luscious, followed by freshness and uplift that clamps the mid-palate and takes you vertically up in a whirl of mint and eucalyptus. It has gorgeous grip with violet edges, and for me this beats the brilliant 2015 because I love the push and pull between intensity and teasingly-slow acidity. It's all finesse, rewarding the effort and investment that has gone into La Fleur Pétrus in recent years. I loved it en primeur and I love it in bottle.

Velouté, floral et fruité, très raffiné, pas ultra-puissant mais une grande finesse délicate.

The 2016 La Fleur Petrus is a blend of 91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc. I prefer the aromatics here compared to the Latour-à-Pomerol and Hosanna: much more fruit (raspberry coulis and crushed strawberry), allied with mineralité and a sense of joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannin. It offers black fruit infused with melted tar and graphite notes, the Cabernet Franc imparting a very subtle bell pepper note towards the finish. This is a very fine La Fleur Petrus, not as flamboyant as the 2015, yet pretty and sophisticated.

A parfait of roses, plums, chocolate, truffles, smoke, spice and cherry blossoms creates the nose. Draped in silk, sensuous with lambskin tannins, the wine is the flossy librarian with her hair down — an intellectual Pomerol that also delivers sensuality.

The 2016 La Fleur-Pétrus is all finesse. A wine of translucence and nuance, it is utterly captivating from the very first taste. Blood orange, chalk and white pepper overtones give the wine lift and tension that drive through to the finish. I imagine the 2016 will need a few years to enter its prime drinking window, but it is an absolute stunner today. The Cabernet Franc is especially expressive. The vintage was not without its challenges; some of the younger-vine Merlot succumbed to heat stress and was not used in the final blend. As a result, yields in finished wine are down about 20 percent.

(91 Merlot, 9 Cabernet Franc) This is a firm, introverted, powerful LFP with serious levels of complexity. It is very closed and yet the nose reveals some majestic fruit within its heart. While not overly showy, this is a long wine with immense tension and control and it will age incrementally and slowly for a very long time. 18.5+

It's been fascinating to watch the progression of this wine over the past few years as they have pushed out the less interesting parcels and pulled in those of Guillot and Providence. It is now a very complete footprint of 18.7ha around the 'plateau', not dropping below 30 metres (their definition of a plateau). This is now without a doubt one of the true stars of the appellation, planted to 91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc on gravel and deep clay on an iron-rich subsoil. There are no corners cut here at all. It pulls you in with a seductive caress of violet and peony notes, then fills up the mid-palate with black cherry and bilberry, rounding it off with slate and cool ash. Tightly controlled and perfectly extracted. Drinking Window 2027 - 2050

Dark crimson. Floral and complex bouquet that's not as dense as Hosanna's. The personality is not as clear. I wonder how many parcels went into this wine? Solid but not thrilling performance. Very dry end. 17-

Barrel Sample. A rich wine with just the right tannins, concentrating the juicy black currant fruit and giving power. All of this is lifted by the wine's acidity. It won't be ready for at least 12-15 years.

This has seamless layers of cassis, plum sauce and raspberry reduction notes carried by remarkably velvety structure through a long, graphite-fueled finish. The minerality is there, buried for now. The fruit is gorgeous.—J.M.

So much to this and it shows the magic of Pomerol. Full-bodied, layered and tannic with all the energy and focus of a great vintage from this estate. Superb.
