1999 was a difficult vintage because after a successful summer it rained a lot during harvest. This is a good wine that shows soft summer fruits and gentle tobacco notes, but for me it has less of the La Conseillante magic. The berries were swollen at harvest, and consequently there's a mid-palate dip as the concentration falters, followed by just a touch of dryness on the finish.

The dark ruby-colored 1999 is a beautifully complex, evolved, seductive style of La Conseillante. The wine exhibits sweet black raspberry and cherry liqueur notes intermixed with cedar, toasty oak, licorice, new saddle leather, and dried herbs. It is medium-bodied with no hard edges, extremely pure, and almost sweet (from ripe fruit, not sugar). This is a lush, delicious La Conseillante that merits its reputation as "a Burgundy from Bordeaux." Anticipated maturity: now-2012.

Having put on weight since last year, the 1999 is a candidate for an outstanding score. The acidity is low, and the ruby garnet color is relatively evolved, revealing a touch of pink at the edge. Knock-out aromatics of licorice, tobacco, spice box, black raspberries, cherries, and dried herbs are exceptional. The wine possesses good weight, but it is fleshy and fat because of low acidity. Drink this lush, compelling Pomerol during its first 12-15 years of life.

If it were not lacking a bit of concentration, this 1999 would merit an outstanding rating. A dark ruby/purple color is followed by La Conseillante's tell-tale charm and opulence, presented in an elegant, sweet, jammy black cherry-scented and flavored format with toasty oak in the background. The wine's plush, lush, nicely-textured style are captivating. Already drinking well, it will be a treat to consume when released. However, the finish is a bit short, and there is no doubting that the heavy late September rains have caused a certain dilution. Drink it over the next decade.
