Château Montlandrie - Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux 2011

Les terroirs argileux de la Rive Droite ont permis de récolter des vins illustrant la « puissance contenue » qui distingue les grands vins de Bordeaux.

Les vins du millésime 2011 récoltés sur les parcelles qui n’ont pas souffert des canicules du dimanche 26 et lundi 27 juin ou épargnés par les orages de grêle en particulier ceux du jeudi 1 septembre, allient harmonieusement tous les goûts du vin : arômes floraux et de fruit mur , texture dense et ferme puis profondeur voluptueuse.

Avec des vendanges plus précoces qu’en 2010, commencées le lundi 5 septembre par les plantes de merlot et finies le lundi 26 septembre avec les cabernets francs, les écoulages réalisés dés le 28 et 29 septembre ont permis des descentes en barrique tout aussi précoce.

Les richesses tanniques et les équilibres acides rappellent le millésime précédent mais les degrés d’alcool sont moindres créant de nouvelles îles de bonheur.

Good full medium red. Aromas of red cherry, mint and black pepper, with some obvious caramel oak (this was aged in 50% new barrels). Fat, lush and suave on entry, with layered flavors of red plum, red berries and balsamic herbs, then turns tight and peppery on the back end. Finishes chewy and persistent, with some lingering oakiness.

A thrilling offering from proprietor Denis Durantou (who also owns Pomerol’s l’Eglise-Clinet), this blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc is a surprisingly large-scaled Cotes de Bordeaux Castillon revealing a dense ruby/purple color as well as lots of sweet mulberry, kirsch, black currant, licorice, spring flower and graphite notes. Medium to full-bodied as well as remarkably concentrated, this wine outperforms many of Bordeaux’s more famous names in this vintage. A stunner in quality and value, it can be enjoyed over the next 10+ years. It is a sleeper of the vintage.

This shows lots of blueberry and mineral character with hints of chalk. Medium to full body, chewy tannins and a polished, refined texture. Needs another two or three years to soften.

(75% merlot and 25% cabernet franc; 50% new oak): Deep purple-ruby. Explosive merlot-driven aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, vanilla and milk chocolate. hen rich, sweet, soft and fresh, with sweet blackberry and blueberry flavors joined by a note of balsamic vinegar on the long, smooth finish. A second sample that had been prepared four days earlier had lost the wonderful charm of the merlot, and its cabernet franc-induced austerity was dominating. But with its floral, white pepper, strawberry and mineral notes, this sample was just as good as the first one, only different.
