The 1998 Calon-Ségur, blended of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, is deep garnet-purple in color with just a touch of brick and a very earthy/meaty nose with notions of new leather, smoked game, truffles, dusty soil, iron ore and mossy bark over a core of crème de cassis, preserved plums, spice cake and unsmoked cigars plus a waft of incense. The palate is medium-bodied and packed with spicy and earthy layers with velvety tannins, seamless freshness and great length. Give it 10 to 15+ more years. Drink 2018 - 2033.

Tasted from an ex-château bottle at BI Wine & Spirits Calon-Segur dinner in London. The 1998 Calon Segur has a stemmy, undergrowth-scented bouquet that feels a little rough-hewn and rustic. It is rather hard-going and standoffish, to be truthful. The palate is brawny with an herbaceous element from the beginning: masculine and curmudgeonly with a burly and dry finish. This is maturing in less stately fashion than I suspected since I tasted it many years ago; I would drink this in the near future. It feels like a train intermittently slipping off of its tracks. Although austere tannin may keep this wine from obtaining an outstanding score, it exhibits plenty of complexity in its earthy, truffle, black cherry, currant, plum, and herb-scented bouquet as well as flavors. Moderately tannic, with good weight, it is a classically-styled 1998. Despite the fact that Calon-Segur tends to utilize about 35% Merlot in the final blend, it is not one of the more precocious efforts of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030.

This wine exhibits an evolved complexity, attractive black cherry/cassis fruit, fine depth and richness as well as integrated relatively sweet tannin. It is not a profound Calon-Segur , but it is very good. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2016.

This is a tannic, backward Calon-Segur with an impressively saturated dark ruby/purple color, and restrained, unyielding aromatics that offer up earth, dried herbs, black fruits, and smoke. The wine is tough-textured, yet well concentrated, with medium body, and high tannin in the long finish. This traditionally made wine may reward those with patience. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018.
