1990: An amber/orange edge to the color suggests full maturity, and the aromas and flavors confirm it. The medium-bodied 1990 Calon Segur exhibits sweet cedar, currant, herb, plum, and kirsch notes along with a dusty earthiness. It lacks the concentration of the finest vintages from the mid-nineties as well as every top vintage from 2000 onward. No doubt high yields and a lack of a strict selection have resulted in a wine that has consistently been on a fast evolutionary track. There is a sensuality and sexiness to it because of its full maturity. Very pleasant at present, it needs to be drunk up over the next 4-5 years.

Super. Dark ruby-red. Intense aromas of violets, licorice, plums and berries. Full-bodied, with a thick, concentrated fruit structure and soft, velvety tannins.--1990 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2005.

The dark ruby-colored 1990, which already reveals some amber, offers a fragrant bouquet of spicy, oaky, cherry, and herb-like fruit. This is an admirably concentrated, surprisingly approachable, extremely well-balanced wine with outstanding depth and purity of fruit to its medium-bodied personality. The 1990 has put on weight since I last tasted it. Dark ruby-colored, with a fragrant bouquet of spicy, oaky, cherry, and herb-like fruit, this is an admirably concentrated, surprisingly approachable, extremely well-balanced wine with great depth and purity of fruit. Anticipated maturity: 1995-2010.

This wine continues to remind me of the excellent 1976 and 1985 Calon-Segurs. Although it lacks sufficient concentration to be considered profound, the wine is charming and full of wonderful spicy, oaky, cherry and herb-like flavors. Extremely well-balanced, it is a medium-bodied, alluring example of Calon-Segur. Given the impossible-to-predict behavior of this wine in the bottle, I would not be surprised if it firms up and lasts longer than I have projected. Anticipated maturity: 1997-2010.
