Angélus - Château Angélus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2002

Les vendanges débutent le 20 septembre et s'étalent jusqu'au 8 octobre, avec de nombreuses pauses en fonction de la maturité optimale de chaque cépage, chaque parcelle.
Les conditions climatiques ayant été pariculièrement favorables pour les cabernets francs, ces derniers représentent une forte proportion dans l'assemblage.
D'un noir très brillant, les vins offrent des arômes profonds de fruits, framboise, cassis, avec de délicates notes épicées. En bouche, un magnifique équilibre entre des tannins mûrs et racés et une chair riche, l'alliance de la puissance et de la finesse, une longueur impressionnante. Garde 2020.

Tasted blind at Farr’s 2002 Bordeaux tasting. Very ripe and rather ostentatious on the nose, but somehow there is a sense of the bouquet being overdone, lacking natural sensibility. Black cherry, cassis, liquorices and then a touch of bacon and some clayey aromas. The palate is a little better, but rather forced and chewy, spice, sous-bois, smoky, espresso-tinged finish. This is a tannic, masculine Saint Emilion, becoming spicier in the glass. Competent...but lacking charm. Tasted October 2009.

Luscious and rich on the nose with a hint of tar and leather. Sweet start and more gloss than most. Pavie? Rather uncomfortable tannins at present (and, I see, on every other occasion I have tasted it both en primeur and since). Drink 2012-18

A successful offering for the vintage, the 2002 exhibits a deep ruby/purple/plum color as well as a sweet, forward style with black fruits intermixed with espresso roast, lavender, and Provencal herbs. Medium to full-bodied, lush, and round, with fine purity, ripeness, and surprising body and sweetness for a right bank 2002, it can be drunk now or cellared for 12-15 years.

Impressive dark color for the vintage, with lots of grapey vanilla with black licorice aromas. Full-bodied, with silky tannins. Wild finish. Tastes like cinnamon and cardamom. Angélus kicks. Well done. Best after 2007. 4,830 cases made.

A somewhat atypical Angelus given the high percentage of Cabernet Franc, this 2002 displays great class as well as potential complexity. Its blue/purple color is accompanied by a big, elegant, sweet wine that combines finesse with power and authority. Because of the high amount of Cabernet Franc, it may turn out to be one of the most aromatically compelling Angélus offerings to date. There is also robust tannin apparent in the long, medium to full-bodied finish. It is unquestionably one of St-Emilion's most complete, concentrated, and provocative wines of 2002.
