Moving to the reds, the 2017 Virginie de Valandraud offers lots of charcoal, graphite, and spice, with background red and blue fruits, and is a charming, even sexy 2017 that’s nicely balanced and elegant. Drink it over the coming 7-8 years.

The 2017 Virginie de Valandraud is a gorgeous second wine. Dark, pliant and inviting, the 2017 has so much to offer. Cherry jam, white chocolate, menthol, licorice and rose petal all flesh out in this beautifully expressive, savory Saint-Émilion. The Cabernets give lovely aromatic lift and brightness throughout. The blend is 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The production of 2017 Virginie de Valandraud was halved this year due to frost. It needed some encouragement from the glass, not quite as giving as previous vintages, eventually revealing scents of blueberry, cassis, violets and a touch of cold stone. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, ripe tannin that frame layers of sweet black cherry and cassis fruit. I admire the energy within this Virginie de Valandraud, the manner in which the tongue is left tingling after the wine has departed.

The 2017 Virginie de Valandraud is deep garnet-purple in color and offers up aromas of crushed blackberries, warm black cherries and violets with scents of cedar chest and cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied with ripe, plush tannins and great freshness, it delivers a lovely core of pure black fruit and a floral finish.
