Readers should be aware that this is a wine I underrated in my original report on the 1998 vintage. It is performing better out of bottle than it did from cask. With age, the mid-section has filled out and the wine has put on weight. A deep plum/garnet color is accompanied by an up-front, seductive nose of melted licorice, cedar, plums, black cherries, and cassis. This attractive Talbot is nicely-textured and medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannin. It is pleasing to see how this wine has matured. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2016.

Aromas of red fruit, meat, earth and cabbage. Medium-bodied, with light tannins and a light finish. Very short. Not as good as from barrel. Best after 2003. 25,000 cases made.

Dark ruby, with less color saturation than most Medocs, the 1998 Talbot offers medium body, moderate concentration, and a light, elegant style with good ripeness. However, it lacks density, concentration, and length. Drink it during its first decade of life.

An elegant, medium-weight Talbot, I enjoyed the 1998 because of its ripe, open-knit style. It does not possess significant volume or concentration, but it exhibits a dark ruby color with purple nuances. Smoked olive and cassis fruit aromas and flavors characterize this soft, medium-bodied 1998 with a round, generous finish. A supple wine, it was made without excessive extraction, thus avoiding the problem of astringent tannin. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.
