Solaia - Toscana IGT 2002

Early spring was slightly rainy and slightly shorter than usual for all varieties. The subsequent weather conditions were excellent for flowering and fruit setting, with balanced fruit production on the vines. From mid-July the unusually rainy weather which ripens the life of the grapes. In the last three weeks of the harvest the weather was extremely variable: initially stable (enabling the grapes still to be picked to complete the ripening process) with frequent rain towards the end. The 2002 harvest was one of the most difficult in recent years, and while the quality was excellent in some areas, others yielded unsatisfactory results due to the influence of the weather. The unusual weather caused a delay in ripening, making scrupulous selection necessary during harvesting. Nevertheless the Sangiovese, traditional partner of Cabernet in the Solaia, was not up to satisfactory quality for the wine's particular features. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc harvest took place about 8 days later than in 2001. Thanks to careful selection of the grapes, maceration and fermentation followed the pattern of the best Solaia vintage years. The oak barrels for 16 months. It was for a further 12 months in bottles before becoming available to buy.

Pretty and silky red with medium body and a meat, berry and chocolate character. This is not the normal quality level of Solaia. Only Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc (normally there's 20 percent Sangiovese). Best after 2005. 5,800 cases made.
