Château Petit Mouton - Pauillac 2008

2008 restera dans les mémoires comme une année climatique particulièrement instable. Après un printemps frais et humide (températures voisines de 0°C le 7 avril), on retrouve en juin un temps de saison mais le cycle végétatif de la vigne prend du retard. Juillet se montre ensoleillé et sec, mais l'été se poursuit par un mois d'août en demi-teinte, ce qui accroît l'exigence du suivi dans le vignoble. Cependant les précipitations d'août, conformes à la moyenne, n'entraînent pas un excès d'eau et le niveau des nappes phréatiques à des seuils comparables à ceux atteints ces dernières années. La première quinzaine de septembre subit encore un déficit d'ensoleillement, ce qui laisse présager un millésime difficile. Heureusement, un extraordinaire été indien commence le 14 septembre et se poursuit jusqu'au 20 octobre, renversant totalement la situation. Ces bonnes conditions climatiques précédant la récolte font monter les degrés alcooliques et permettent d'obtenir une très bonne maturité phénolique des raisins. Afin d'obtenir une maturation optimale des baies et de profiter des très belles conditions météorologiques, les vendanges sont retardées et se déroulent du 2 au 15 octobre, permettant de rentrer les raisins dans un état sanitaire excellent. Il aura fallu être patient pour récolter le millésime 2008, et particulièrement exigent, de la vigne jusqu'à la vinification. Ce millésime hors normes a produit des vins qui s'annoncent néanmoins d'une qualité remarquable.

I don't remember a second wine of Mouton being so outstanding. This is really plummy and juicy on the nose with flowers and lots of everything. Full and velvety with a lovely texture. Long and very pretty. Plenty of chocolate and lightly toasted oak. Bright and exciting. Give it three or four years of bottle age.

Produced from 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot, this sexy, seductive Le Petit Mouton is round, generous, elegant and pure with lots of blue and black fruits and no hard edges. Drink this seamless, impressive 2008 second wine over the next 10-15 years. Drink 2011-2026

Good deep ruby-red. Exotic aromas of roasted plum, currant and graphite suggest real depth. Fat and soft on the palate but with lovely freshness and good precision to its flavors of black cherry, cassis, and milk chocolate. This smooth wine really dusts the entire palate with flavor, finishing with big but smooth tannins and notes of coffee and licorice.

Mittleres Granat-Rubin, satte Mitte. Delikates Bouquet, verspielt mit parfümierten Cassis- und Nussschokonoten, mittlere Fülle mit viel Eleganz. Eleganter, saftiger Gaumen, wunderschön reife Tannine mit mittlerem Gewicht, auch hier zeigt der feminine Wein eine schon fast fröhliche Note. The second wine, Le Petit Mouton, continues to go from strength to strength. The 2008, a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Merlot, represents 24% of the production. Notes of incense, graphite, and black currants are followed by a wine with sweet tannin and a fruit-forward, friendly style, much like its bigger and more dramatic sibling. It should be drinkable in its first 10-15 years of life.

Second wine. Very dense purplish crimson. Tasted immediately after the Clerc Milon this seemed a distinct step up in ripeness and aromatic appeal. Very polished. Luscious start and lovely satin texture followed by an extremely respectable dry, neat finish. Extraordinarily delicious already! Just a measure of ripe tannins, pretty well covered by ripe fruit, on the finish. Seductive. ‘Feminine’. Drink 2015-25

A blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Merlot, this, again, is more introverted on the nose, or ‘tightly coiled’ being a more apt description. Blackberry, woodland, damp moss and a touch of burning embers. The palate is medium-bodied, very fine tannins, real weight coming through in the mouth. Blackberry, cedar, a slight coca-element from the new oak. Very harmonious with greater persistency than the ’07. Lovely. Tasted April 2009.
