As with Les Forts de Latour, this puts on a show. Petit Mouton is resplendent with crème caramel and damson notes rather than coffee grounds however, and is a generous, graceful wine. So succulent, with a full 76% of well-ripened Cabernet Sauvignon – don’t tell me you couldn’t sink right into a bottle of this and go for it. Maybe the wine of the tasting for drinking today.

Medium red-ruby. Expressive nose melds currant, cherry, tobacco leaf and fresh herbs. Supple and drinkable already, with a fragrant component of exotic smoky oak adding interest to the dark berry and herbal flavors. Finishes slightly tart, with a fine dusting of tannins.

Pleasant, with berry, light toasty oak and fresh herbs on the nose, leading to a medium body and a delicate finish. The second wine of Mouton. Best after 2011.

Although I left the wine in the glass for over five minutes – the nose still comes across just a little over-ripe and lacking some delineation. Black cherries, raspberry and a touch of tangerine. The palate is better, some nice grippy tannins, off-dry, very good delineation and focus, the finish adorned with crisp blackberry, cedar and a touch of tobacco. Lovely Cabernet here. Fine. Tasted April 2008.

Firm purplish crimson. Good attack. Quite a powerful nose. Very round and supple with just a little inkiness underneath. Lots there – more than on Les Carruades, for example!

Good deep colour, seductive, spicy and quite exotic fruit, quite supple and quite broad, quite easy blackcurrant flavours, certainly a minor Mouton, but a little hollow behind the very good fruit. Drink 2012-17.

Attractive blackberry and toasted oak, with plenty of tar and licorice on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, with good fruit and ripe tannins, but slightly hollow in the center palate. Second wine of Mouton. Seems better than the 2006. —J.S.
