Methuselah Château Cantenac Brown - Margaux 2009 b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca

The bud burst is lively, it spreads over the first half of April. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The flowering of the Merlots and Cabernets Sauvignons takes place rapidly at the end of May and in very good weather conditions. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca Veraison begins on July 24 for the Merlots and July 31 for the Cabernets. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The months of August, September and October are truly exceptional. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The daily thermal amplitudes were often important with cool nights and hot days, perfect for good maturity. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The climate remained summery until early October, then temperatures dropped rapidly with morning frosts on October 16 and 18. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca From the first pumping over, the sensations were confirmed: the colors are incredibly intense, the scent of fruit perfumes the vat room. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca Each stage of this 2009 vintage has been savored, from the choice of the plot to be harvested to the plot vinification. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The difficulty is to make a "Bordeaux". b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca It is indeed a vintage marked by high degrees, fortunately compensated by a very nice freshness. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The tannins are dense and the batches will make smooth and refined wines, the balance is there. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca Nature has given everything. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca It is undeniably an exceptional vintage, it is a very great Bordeaux. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca Aging in 50% new barrels b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. One of the standout and perhaps most surprising showings was the performance of Cantenac-Brown '09. It has a more lifted, oaky bouquet with dark cherries, cassis and violets. It displays good precision with admirable purity. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet sappy entry. It is very primal compared to its peers, but it shows very good balance, whilst the finish is precise and silky smooth. This has more to give and so patience is required. Tasted January 2013.

Full ruby-red. Brooding aromas of blackberry, espresso and licorice complicated by truffley underbrush. Then intensely flavored, juicy and tight, dominated today by its firm tannic spine and sound acidity. Quite primary in a positive way, this rather backward wine may merit a 90-point rating with five or six years of cellaring. 89(+?) points

his is perfumy and very pure, with lovely lilac and blackberry aromas followed by plum, cassis and black cherry fruit. The supple finish is caressed with toast that leaves a lingering, perfumy feel. Best from 2013 through 2023. 8,915 cases made. –JM

asted twice in Bordeaux, I must say that whatever was shown to me in cask certainly did not appear to be performing as well from bottle. It could be just that the wine has closed down, but I had thought this was an extraordinary wine and one of the big time sleepers of the vintage. The tannins have taken hold, and although the wine is still outstanding, any hopes of achieving a mid-90 point score, as I had hoped, seem highly questionable. Dense ruby/purple with notes of graphite, blackberries and forest floor, the wine is full-bodied, powerful, excruciatingly tannic and closed, and that may be why it’s not showing as well as I predicted. Certainly, this was the biggest discrepancy between barrel and bottle that I saw in the vintage, but the wine is still outstanding, just not profound. It will be interesting to revisit this wine in a number of years. Forget it for 7-8 years and drink it over the following 30.

Wonderful aromas of crushed raspberries, flowers, and hints of vanilla bean. Full body, with silky tannins and a juicy finish. Fresh and minerally. Best in 2018.

Opaque inky-purple. Flamboyant, exotic nose offers aromas of superripe black fruits, smoked meat, coffee and dark chocolate liqueur. Then very ripe and soft in style, with creamy flavors of ripe dark fruits supported by soft, polished tannins. Finishes moderately long, with a lingering floral note. Tasted three different times with different impressions, hence the wider-than-usual scoring range.

13% alcohol. 65CS, 35M There’s a fair whack of oak on this Cabernet-dominated blend at the moment, but the bramble and cassis fruit beneath is supple, yet well-structured, too. The tannins are sweet and silky, but there’s enough power to sustain the wine in barrel and bottle. 10+ years.

O=2015 G=25 ans

Reife schwarze Kirschenfrucht, Zwetschken, etwas Dörrobst, Zesten. Mittlere Textur, etwas Bitterschokolade, extrahierte Tannine, leicht spröde im Abgang, trockener Nachhall.

Simon Halabi’s property continues to assert itself. The blend is 65% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot, 50% new oak. They produced 42% of the first wine in 2009, and 58% went into the second wine BriO. This is very emphatic, big and exuberant, almost seductive, if slightly try-hard. The 2008 felt more of a leap in quality for me, but this is certainly keeping up its level.

The estate is now playing with the big boys! The remarkable opaque ruby-purple colored Cantenac Brown boasts blackberry liqueur, eucalyptus/white flower, cassis, and damp stone perfumes. It is aromatically pure and accompanied by a fabulous medium to full-body, and gobs of extracted flower flavour infused with superb ripeness of blackberry and cherry. This is another potent Margaux of elegance and power with huge potential due to the potency of fruit and substantial length. A huge wine by José Sanfins and certainly the beginning of things to come. Maturity period. 2015-2031.

Tasted at a negociant. Definite prune aromas on the nose: over-mature: more Languedoc than Margaux. The palate is full-bodied with thick and chewy tannins. It is actually quite a pure, very agreeable Cabernet, but there is no sense of Bordeaux typicité (which is kinda what you and I pay for?) Tasted March 2010.

Sweet, plummy wine, its tannins coming from spiced wood as much as fruit. There is a dry core, but the fruit is so opulent and ripe.

Sattes Purpur-Granat. 2018–2036

The greatest Cantenac Brown I have ever tasted, this monumental effort possesses enormous concentration, with loads of black and blue fruits intermixed with damp earth and forest floor. I have never seen a Cantenac Brown so seamless, so powerful, yet at the same time, so elegant and densely complex. They have certainly done something here that has not been accomplished over the last three decades I have been tasting this estate’s wines. Opaque purple in color and full-bodied, this big-time sleeper of the vintage merits serious attention for the first time in my professional career. Kudos to the new ownership and team at Cantenac Brown. This wine should evolve over a 30-year period. (Tasted two times.) Drink 2010-2040. (94-96*) points

Dense purple red, quite meaty, savoury nose with a good lift of freshness and spice, good extraction and good firm tannins, a fleshy, fragrant wine with a good future. Drink 2014-22.

Dark crimson. Intense meat extract savoury nose. Then rather loose on the palate with the furry tannins coming in only on the very end. Reasonably dramatic wine, not at all in the classic Margaux mould. A little drying on the finish, and just a slight lack of freshness. But certainly it has pzazz and impact. Determinedly modernistic.
