Methuselah Château D'Armailhac - Pauillac 2005 b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca

The 2005 vintage will remain a special year in terms of climate. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The year was indeed slightly colder than the quarantine average (-0.3 ° C), and this was mainly due to cooler than normal nights. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The months of April to September were particularly dry and rainfall recorded from the start of the year until the harvest was only 313 mm instead of 602 mm on average. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca Despite this exceptional situation, the cycle of the vine is registered in a usual kinetics: the flowering for the 3 grape varieties was grouped around June 5, the veraison is only paparue a few days in advance between the 1st b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca and August 8. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca Finally, the harvest took place between September 31 and October 6 under conditions that can be described as optimal. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca If, because of this atypical drought, the volumes harvested are moderate, the wines show, for their part, rich, powerful and racy tannins. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca By are profitl, 2005 is not in recall 1976, 1982 or 1995. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca

D’Armailhac’s 2005 offers notes of cedar wood, forest floor, black and red currants, spice box and earth. It is medium-bodied, relatively soft for a 2005, and best drunk over the next 12-15 years.

Mid crimson. Edgy vegy nose with even a mild suggestion of herbaceousness. Then some lively greenness. Much less sweet and ripe than most 2005s.  13% Drink 2020-2035

Il demeure encore ferm et tonique. Les 30% de merlot qui le composent lui confèrent de la rondeur, mais l'ensemble est encore bien droit. Les tanins sont intégrés.

Tasted single blind at Southwold. This has a gorgeous, ripe nose with blackberry, bilberry and a touch of plum. Good definition and nice lift. The palate is ripe, chewy tannins, nice depth, clean on the finish. Fresh and lively, quite feminine and a nice grippy finish. Full ‘o beans! Drink 2010-2030. Tasted January 2009.

Bright ruby-red. Blueberry, chocolate and leather on the nose, which suggests a wider range of ripeness than the 2006. Unusually sweet and lush for this wine but in a youthfully sullen stage, hinting at sexy oak tones and some leafy high notes. Densely packed but tight and tannic today, with its structure dominating. This needs patience. 89(+?)

This powerful, tannic, structured effort from Mouton-Rothschild’s stable is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by an earthy nose dominated by black currants and toasty, smoky oak. Medium to full-bodied with relatively high tannin, decent acidity, and a fine finish, it should be at its best between 2014-2030.

Mid purplish. Rather inexpressive on the nose. Round and succulent but only mid weight and rather notable acidity. A bit leaner than most 2005s.

Très mûr, avec des notes de cuir et de réglisse, très blle rondeur de bouche et une finale ferme, mais fraîche.

Sattes, tiefes Granat-Purpur, schwarze Reflexe in der Mitte. Süsses, schwarzebeeriges Bouquet, Dôrrfrüchte, Backpflumen, Pumpernickel, frisch gerösteter Kaffee, feine Kräuter- und Minznoten. Samtiger, fleischiger Gaumen, viel Stoff aufweisend, süsses Extrakt, verführerisch im Finale, rots Cassis, Tahiti-Vanille, gekocte Walderdbeeren.

Abundant tannin in addition to a deep ruby/purple hue, superb purity, and a lovely texture are found in this delicious Pauillac. One of the finest d’Armailhacs I have ever tasted, it is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that achieved an amazing 13.3% natural alcohol. Aromas of black currants, creamy oak, and earth emerge from this medium to full-bodied effort. It should be drinkable in 4-5 years, and will last for two decades or more.

(60% cabernet sauvignon, 29% merlot, 10% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot; 25% new oak) Ruby-red. Cassis aroma lifted by flowers and sweet oak scents. Supple, sweet and full, with expressive flavors of currant, espresso and spicy oak; perhaps a bit less smoky than recent vintages. Unusually silky and suave for this wine, finishing with firm but pliant tannins. This should be approachable within three or four years.

I think the 2005 d’Armailhac may turn out even better than its stable mate, Clerc-Milon. This combination of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot achieved 13.3% alcohol. Revealing lovely creme de cassis-like notes, a beautiful texture, brightness, and sweet tannin, it is an impressively endowed, medium to full-bodied, relatively approachable 2005, although it will undoubtedly display more tannin after bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020+.

Aromas of blackberries and ripe fruit with hints of cigar box. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a rich and ripe finish. A balanced and rich wine. May be better than 2003 and 2000. —J.S.
