Medium red-ruby. Currant, cherry and licorice aromas complicated by cooler notes of tobacco leaf, menthol and fresh herbs. The palate offers limited sweetness, with the distinctly green element giving the wine a slightly tart impression. Offers only modest density and length, but I liked its almost sangiovese-like floral quality.

A candidate for the wine of the vintage, the 2007 Lafite Rothschild (84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot) reveals classic Lafite aromas of graphite, unsmoked cigar tobacco, black currants, cherries, and a hint of truffles. The complex aromatics are followed by a round, medium to full-bodied wine with silky tannins, an overall subtle smoky component, and a rich, round, generous, plump finish. Already evolved and delicious, it should continue to drink well for two decades. Drink 2010-2030

A big, juicy wine for the vintage, with spice, sweet tobacco and plum aromas and flavors. Full, long and rich, with a soft texture. A little tight, but should develop nicely in the bottle. Best after 2014.

(84% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot and 1% petit verdot) Good bright ruby. Cassis, minerals, licorice and mint lifted by spices on the nose. Moderately dense and fruit-driven, with lovely mouthcoating breadth to the dark berry, spice and fresh herb flavors; remains just this side of peppery. Best today on the subtle but very persistent finish, which features very fine-grained tannins, a restrained sweetness and a captivating vibrancy. Among the most suave and refined examples of the vintage.

Tiefes Rubingranat, schwarzer Kern, violette Reflexe.

A deep, black/purple colour. The nose is very smooth and seductive with potent ripe black fruits and carefully interwoven new oak that should see the aromatics blossom after bottling. Excellent delineation, touches of cherry liqueur, burnt toast and crushed violets developing in the glass. Much more feminine for Lafite at this primordial stage. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, harmonious with great focus and delineation. A seductive quality to this Lafite, a vintage that wants to seduce from birth, an exoticism that one rarely finds at this early stage. It does not quite have the weight and persistency of a great vintage Lafite, but it compensates with crispness and tension. Fine. Tasted April 2008.

38% of the crop went into the grand vin this year, 55% into Les Carruades. Ruby with quite a wide rim. Very light nose with real freshness. Fine, delicate, yet pretty supple. Not the race of Lafite’s best vintages – a bit softer and less acidity. Drags down just a little on the end of the palate. Quite a bit of tannin. But I’d like a bit of lift and energy! There’s more of that in the Duhart-Milon tasted alongside….

Superb black-red colour, big, almost velvety depth with violets on the nose, very expressive fruit while also being quite restrained, the opposite of exotic, firm, even slightly old-fashioned in its purity and severity of expression, a very fine vineyard wine for mid to long term. Drink 2015-30.

Very new Lafite, with firm, yet polished tannins and subdued currant and sweet tobacco character. Long and structured. Racy. —J.S.
