The 2016 La Petite Marquise du Clos du Marquis, the second Deuxième Vin from Clos du Marquis, is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38.5% Merlot and 0.5% Cabernet Franc. Matured in 25% new oak, it offers quite a rich, quite extroverted bouquet for the vintage with small red cherries, crème de cassis and a touch of incense. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a crisp line of acidity, compact at the moment, but it fans out nicely towards the second half with a dash of spice towards the finish, white pepper tingling on the aftertaste. Bon (deuxième) vin.

A medium bodied, fresh, crisp, classic expression of Cabernet Sauvignon with a fresh finish of berries and cocoa, this wine gives us an entry-level sampling of the wines of Leoville Las Cases. You can drink this on release or age it a year or two. Only the second time this wine has been produced, Jean Hubert Delon considers Clos du Marquis a ‘unique’ wine, not a second wine, as it comes from its own specific terroir. Regardless of how you look at it, adding a second wine — or a ‘unique’ wine — only improves the top wine, which is the goal.

The 2016 La Petite Marquise is plush, inky and totally seductive. Ripe red and purplish fruit, sweet spice and floral notes give the 2016 its unctuous yet midweight personality, enhanced by notable creaminess from the significant presence of Merlot in the blend. Silky and pliant through the middle, with terrific depth but no excess weight, the 2016 is a winner. Don’t miss this fabulous second wine.

(61 Cabernet Sauvignon, 38.5 Merlot, 0.5 Cabernet Franc) | 25% new oak | 12.9% alc. | 76 IPT Quite spicy and firm for a second wine and also a little tart and bitter and while it seems related to its parent, it is a little raw but I would not complain. 16+

The new second wine of Clos de Marquis. The blend here comes in at 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38.5% Merlot and 0.5% Cabernet Franc. There is an attractive touch of white pepper spice on the attack with juicy, tight and controlled fruit. This is a good showing from the young vines of Clos du Marquis, and should be around the same price level as Château Potensac in the same stable of Delon wines. My advice would be to not forget about the brilliant pleasure available in their Médoc wines this year. Drinking Window 2022 - 2034

Second vintage. 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38.5% Merlot, 0.5% Cabernet Franc. 25% new oak. Racy and bright fruited with a hint of juice and tobacco notes. (Mind you, I'm tasting in a salon reeking of Jean Hubert Delon's cigars…!) Inky but fresh and precise. Just a little wanting on the very end.

Barrel Sample. This is the second vintage of this second wine from Clos du Marquis. With its fine black currant and blackberry flavors, it is perfumed and elegant. It has a light touch, boasting more fruit than tannic structure. For medium-term aging.

A firm and silky young wine with wet-earth and blackberry character. Hints of bramble berries. It's so rich on the finish. Second wine of Clos du Marquis.
