Smoke, coffee bean, cigar box and dark, red fruits shape a silky, polished, sweet, fresh, tobacco-singed wine with real character and selling for a song.

The 2015 Clos Marsalette (Rouge) is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc picked between September 21 and October 5 at 42 hectoliters per hectare. Matured in 40% new oak barrels, it has a correct, tightly wound bouquet, blackcurrant with just a touch of wilted violet. I like the definition here, but it is holding its breath in at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin. You could almost slip this down the throat now: silky smooth, just a light grip with fine tannin on the finish. It has an easy-drinking sensibility, though that does not mean it was not thoughtfully crafted. Enjoy this Pessac-Léognan over 5-7 years. Drink 2017-2024

Fruits noirs confiturés, corps large, tannins ronds, de la générosité, du volume avec une certaine ampleur. Superbe échantillon, texture ample et dense, mais sans excès, grande longueur et grande classe. On vérifiera en bouteille.

The 2015 Clos Marsalette, Stephan von Neipperg's Pessac-Léognan, is a rich, ample wine. Broad, generous and inviting, the Clos Marsalette is endowed with serious depth. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, leather and cedar flesh out in the glass. In 2015, the Clos Marsalette is especially big. It also has the potential to be a serious overachiever. Tasted two times.

  • Niepperg sample taken today! Very dark crimson. Almost rudely fruity on the nose! Very opulent indeed. Some inkiness on the finish. It's tempting to describe it as a right bank Graves so plush and velvety is it. Maybe it could do with just a little more freshness?

17/20 2023 – 2038

Bright, with damson plum and bitter cherry notes laced with a subtle sanguine edge. Shows a light juniper shading to the finish. Refined in feel.—J.M.

Lots of mineral and blackberry character. Full and very silky with refined tannins and depth and beauty.
