Château Trotte Old - Saint-Emilion 2012 11166fe81142afc18593181d6269c740

Winter has been mild to end with intense cold and snow on the eve of spring. 11166fe81142afc18593181d6269c740 Spring has seen a lot of rainfall. 11166fe81142afc18593181d6269c740 The pressure of disease has been so great that we have fought it with reasoned struggle. 11166fe81142afc18593181d6269c740 The flower will be partially late and long; 11166fe81142afc18593181d6269c740 coulure and millerandage accompanied it. 11166fe81142afc18593181d6269c740 Second fortnight of July the good weather settles and we find a summer hot and very dry. 11166fe81142afc18593181d6269c740 The autumn rains led us to harvest relatively late for all grape varieties and all our properties. 11166fe81142afc18593181d6269c740

A strong effort from proprietor Philippe Castéja, the 2012 Trottevieille has an inky, opaque purple color with plenty of blueberry and blackcurrant fruit, licorice, earth and subtle background oak. It is medium to full-bodied, with excellent texture, long persistence on the palate and impressive purity. All are impressive and evidence of a very top effort from this property that always seems to be capable of producing even greater wine than it actually does. No one is going to be disappointed in the 2012. It has an anticipated maturity of 2020-2035. (91+)

Such purity of fruit to this wine with plum, currant and berry character. Solid core of fruit and fine tannins. Full and balanced. Very successful for the vintage. Better in 2017.

A touch old-school in feel, with light licorice root and mesquite notes framing the core, this is supple and refined, showing alluring plum, anise and black cherry accents. Light tobacco hints appear in the background, balanced by fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2023. 2,000 cases made. –JM

Mid crimson. Quite beefy and savoury with lots of acidity and slightly green tannins. Chewy finish. A bit unsophisticated with a gawky finish. But it ticks the boxes.Drink 2017-2024

Saturated bright ruby.  Floral nose offers scents of blackberry, mocha, licorice, violet and graphite.  Dense, broad, and ripe for the vintage, with a subtle sweetness to the black cherry, flint and licorice flavors.  Finishes broad and lively, with fine-grained tannins and a repeating floral note.

The Grand Vin is a blend of 49% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon cropped at just 24hl/ha. It has a perfumed nose of dark cherries, raspberry coulis and a touch of vanilla emanating from the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured entry, although it is missing a little weight on the mid palate. It is nicely balanced, quite elegant in fact, but it constitutes and earlier drinking Saint Emilion. Tasted April 2013.

Drink 2017-2023Darkest cherry colour. Bright, dark fruit. Very slightly minty. Fine tannins, all in harmony, straightforward but not particularly exciting. (JH)

The 2012 is a full-bodied, impressively endowed, dense ruby/purple-colored effort exhibiting a flowery, black fruited set of aromatics, medium to full-bodied flavors, well-integrated spicy, toasty oak and an endearing texture as well as length. It should be cellared for 3-5 years and consumed over the following 15+ years. Better than proprietor Philippe Casteja’s 2010 (a far greater vintage than 2012), this is a super-strong effort from this estate. Trottevieille includes a large portion of Cabernet Franc in the blend, and this terroir is sensational, although perhaps under-exploited. This cuvee achieved 13.5% natural alcohol. The final blend of 49% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon was somewhat unusual for a St.-Emilion.Drink: 2016 - 2031

Blending 49% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine opens with earth, spice and black raspberries. Medium bodied and fresh, in a classic style, the wine ends with soft cherry fruits and a bright finish. 89-91 Pts

Peu boisé, notes de réduction, corps moyen, pas forcé, pas très long ni très complexe, pour le moment, sain et d’un tannin élégant.

Fragrant Cabernet nose and palate. Fresh and long. Tannins fine. Perhaps misses a little mid-palate weight. 17/20pts ( 90/100pts)Drink: 2020 - 2030Taster: James Lawther MW

This shows a wonderful length with a depth of fruit and intensity. Full body, with wonderful fruit. Intense tannin structure and length. Success for the vintage. 48% Merlot, 49% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon.
