Château Trotte Old - Saint-Emilion 2005 11166fe81142afc18593181d6269c740

With a higher than average temperature, a rainfall where we missed 305 mm compared to the average of the last thirty years, it was a year as we have never seen. 11166fe81142afc18593181d6269c740 July and August were almost without rain with high winds, relatively warm temperatures and especially cool nights. 11166fe81142afc18593181d6269c740 After the few rains in early September, the weather has returned to the beautiful. 11166fe81142afc18593181d6269c740

Owned by the Castéja family, Trottevieille has one parcel of some of the oldest vines in St.-Emilion. Dense purple, the 2005 is better at age 10 then earlier. The wine has beautiful blueberry, plum and blackcurrant fruit, an attractive underlying minerality, medium to full body, sweet tannin, and a long, layered, complex finish. Drink it over the next 15-20 years.

Nez puissant aux volutes d'épices. Bouche d'une haute densité, armée de tanins juvéniles, avec une finale persistante. A attendre impérativement au moins dix ans. 44% de cabernet franc.

Tasted single blind at Southwold. A pure sweet exotic nose – quite ravishing with its ripe raspberry and cassis-scented fruit. Nice definition. A sweet entry, very pure and lush but with good acidity and harmony and notes of cranberry and raspberry towards the svelte finish. Oozes class but it needs time. Drink 2012-2020+ Tasted January 2009.

Good ruby-red. Sexy, spicy, slightly high-toned aromas of currant and dark chocolate. Sweet, lush and suave, offering excellent mouth coverage and conveying a strong impression of extract. Finishes impressively long, with firm tannins buried in fruit.

Possibly the finest Trottevielle I have ever tasted, proprietor Philippe Casteja continues to ratchet up this estate’s quality. The dense blue/purple-hued 2005 offers a flamboyant bouquet of black fruits, licorice, chocolate, incense, espresso, and pain grille. Full-bodied with beautiful richness, good acidity, sweet but substantial tannin, and a textured mouthfeel, it shows exceptionally well at present, but it will benefit from 5-6 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028.

Very dark crimson. Pretty solid and earthbound on the nose. Round and sweet on the palate. Stil quite chewy tannins. A solid if unexciting representative of thevintage. Could there be the merest hint of green on the finish?

Philippe Casteja has turned in a terrific effort as the 2005 is the finest Trottevieille I have ever tasted. It boasts a deep blue/black color as well as a beautiful perfume of creme de cassis, asphalt, truffles, and pain grille, stunning richness, fresh, lively acidity, sweet tannin, and a long, full-bodied finish. This outstanding St.-Emilion should be drinkable in 4-5 years, and keep for two decades or more.

Kudos to proprietor Philippe Casteja, who has produced the finest Trottevieille I have tasted. A blockbuster effort, the 2005 boasts an inky/blue/purple color along with aromas of creme de cassis, blackberries, truffles, fruitcake, and toasty oak. Pure and full-bodied with significant extract, tannin, acidity, and alcohol, this stunning wine should be very long lived. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030+.

Violets and blackberries galore follow through to a full-bodied palate, with intense blackberry flavors and a long, long finish. The core of ripe fruit in this is wonderful. Stunning for this estate. —J.S.
