Tasted blind. Lots of glamour and density on the nose with real St-Estèphe integrity too. Round and chock full of St-Estèphe stoniness. Beautiful texture. Should last very well for a 2012 but not as well as other vintages. The most concentrated wine of the Southwold tasting so far (though I have not yet tasted the 2012 Pauillacs). Drink 2022- 2040

From the Gardinier family, this 2012 has a dense, ruby/purple color, sweet blueberry and blackcurrant fruit, background earth and spice, with moderate, velvety tannins. This medium-bodied wine has good fruit, ripeness and a rather classic mouthfeel. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

Lots of violet, sandalwood, currant and tar character. Subtle and pretty. Full body, fine tannins and a balanced and fresh finish. Pretty wine. Hard not to drink now. Better in 2018.

Offers a dark, dense feel, with layers of fig, blackberry, leather, chestnut, tobacco and loam all carrying through the broad, smoky finish. Features solid fruit, with an ample tug of earth. A solid effort for the vintage. Best from 2017 through 2022. 15,000 cases made. –JM

Dark, ripe cassis fruit. Pretty dry tannins make it rather hard work, and could do with more flesh in the middle. (JH)13% Drink 2022-2032

Well managed tannins with softness and elegance. Plums, red currant and cherries on the palate. Approachable, drinkable early and the wine follows the vintage which is not a concentrated nor hot year.

Tasted as a barrel sample at en primeur. The Phelan Segur was cropped between 8 and 14 October and an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2012 has a ripe, sweet well-defined bouquet with nicely integrated oak, although it does not quite has the vigour of Calon Segur. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, dry tannins. There is a balsamic note towards the finish that lends freshness and edginess although it does fade a little on the finish. Tasted April 2013.

Features a supple core of plum and red currant fruit, with floral and rooibois tea notes. The finish delivers perfume, accented by a flicker of minerality. Dusty but persistent. —J.M.

A hollow middle appears to be the undoing of this St.-Estephe. It exhibits a deep ruby/plum color along with black raspberry and currant fruit and hints of tobacco leaf, licorice and wet earth. It starts well, has a dark color and finishes with ripe tannin, but its lack of a mid-palate is worrisome. I am unsure whether it will eventually fill out or not.

This earthy, cassis-filled, medium-bodied wine has an oaky, fleshy core of dark fruit that ends with fresh blackberries and dark chocolate. 88-90 Pts

Blackish crimson. Very lively on the nose after the Pauillacs and St-Juliens. Though there is some sweetness on the palate. Dense – almost opulent for a St-Estèphe.

Couleur sombre, intense et belle. Nez fruité de type mûr et vanillé. Entrée en bouche un peu discrète, puis le vin se développe tendre, fruité et savoureux sur un corps normal et une finale bien enveloppée et savoureuse, de longueur normale.

This is a little lean and hard but has some interesting berry and mineral character. Chewy tannins. Let’s see how it evolves in barrel.
