The 1995 is dark ruby/purple-colored, with a sweet, ripe, black currant, earthy, lead pencil-scented nose, this medium-bodied wine offers attractive glycerin on the attack, medium body, moderate tannin, and a pure, clean winemaking style. It will benefit from 2-3 years of aging, and may turn out to be outstanding, although it appears to have dropped some of its intensity while aging in the barrel. Is this a modern day 1966? Anticipated maturity: 2001-2016. Last tasted 11/97

A softer, more accessible version of the more tannic 1996, Pape-Clement's 1995 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, and a lovely nose of spice, lead pencil, minerals, smoke, and tobacco-tinged black currants. Rich and ripe, with medium body, sweet fruit on the attack, and an overall sense of elegance and impeccable equilibrium, this beautifully knit, complex wine is already enjoyable. Anticipated maturity: Now-2015. One of the quintessentially elegant, complex, and most distinctive wines of Bordeaux, Pape-Clement has been in top form since the 1986 vintage.

Brillant violet, berry and black-truffle aromas. Full-bodied and very chewy, with loads of berry, tobacco and earthlike flavors. Medium finish. Only in fourth-gear now, wait for fifth and sixth. Best after 2002.

This property has come on strong since the 1986 vintage. While I do not believe either the 1994 or 1995 will rival the quality of the 1990, 1988, or 1986, both are fine wines. The 1995 is a soft, finesse-styled wine with a more saturated purple color than the 1994, excellent aromatics that include scents of scorched earth, sweet black fruits, lead pencil, and toasty new oak. Stylish, with medium body, and an attractively sweet mid-palate, this is not a large-scaled wine, but rather, one of outstanding purity, focus, and personality. Fifty percent of the harvest was declassified and the final blend was 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. This wine will benefit from 2-4 years of cellaring and keep for 15 years.
