Firm, masculine and tannic with plenty of earth, truffle, asphalt and volcanic characteristics, this burly La Mission-Haut-Brion is bordering on being monolithic/foursquare. It reveals good body as well as plenty of tannin, adequate acidity, a dark plum/garnet color, and classic La Mission terroir characteristics of smoke, scorched earth, spice, roasted meats and camphor. Neither big nor wimpish, it, like many wines of this vintage, appears to be aging nicely. While fully mature, it displays enough youthful characteristics, from its tannin to its vibrant, moderately intense fruit, to suggest it will hold up for another two decades.

A very concentrated, sweet, yet at the same time well-delineated 1988 that has a dark plum/garnet color with some lightening at the edge, this rather muscular, earthy wine shows notes of creosote, scorched earth, deep, sweet black cherries, coffee, and a hint of chocolate. It is a chewy, dense wine that will never be the most harmonious La Mission, but it is mouth-filling and substantial. Anticipated maturity: Now-2014. Last tasted, 9/02.

I don't remember the '88 La Mission as being so wonderfully opulent. It shows fabulous violet, berry and dried fruit aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins and a long, ripe and delicious aftertaste.--1988 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2002

Ferociously hard from cask, the 1988 La Mission is now exhibiting an attractive opulence and gobs of fruit. It has turned out to be a beautifully made, deep, full-bodied, concentrated, rich, well-structured wine that will last for 15-20 years. It is a bigger, deeper, yet softer, more concentrated wine than its neighbor, Haut-Brion. Anticipated maturity: 1994-2012. Last tasted, 6/93.

Perhaps the high quality of Merlot (45% in this vintage's blend) has helped provide the 1988 with significant opulence and depth of fruit. The 1988 has turned out to be a beautifully made, deep, full-bodied, concentrated, rich, well-structured wine that will last for 15-20 years. It is a big, deep, soft, concentrated wine. Anticipated maturity: 1994-2012.
