Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. The La Lagune '09 has a lifted bouquet of violet, pomegranate, crushed stone and just a touch of orange peel. It is very well defined and exhibits impressive precision. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. This is nicely balanced with good weight on the firm, masculine finish, touches of balsamic lingering on the aftertaste. This is an excellent La Lagune. Tasted January 2013.

(60% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and 10% petit verdot): Deep, bright ruby-red. Sexy aromas of currant, underbrush, leather and toasty oak. Plush, seamless and sweet; full-bodied but not heavy. Pliant flavors of currant, plum and earth expand to fill the mouth. Finishes with broad, fine tannins and sneaky building length. Classic Old World claret from a ripe year: velvety, sweet and long.

It is not unusual that the 2009 La Lagune is a spectacular effort given the fact that this estate has been making terrific wines over the last decade or more. It boasts a dense purple color as well as a beautiful perfume of blueberries, mulberries, cassis, white chocolate and subtle toasty oak. Notes of Chinese black tea, cedarwood and forest floor also make an appearance in the singular aromatic and flavor profiles. This sumptuous, full-bodied La Lagune possesses low acidity, abundant but ripe, sweet tannin and a long, 45-second finish. Give this beauty 5-7 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades.

13.9% alcohol. 60CS, 25M, 15PV The classic southern Médoc elegance of La Lagune is beautifully apparent on the nose and palate here. This is a very complete wine that tastes remarkably polished at such a young age. Well balanced, sensitively oaked and supple, with impressive poise and length. 10+ years.

(a blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 15% petit verdot) Deep ruby. Enticing aromas of violet, red cherry and graphite. Creamy and soft on entry, then shows surprising backbone to the rather delicate red and black fruit flavors. Finishes long and smooth, with a tactile, almost sweet mouth feel that may not be for purists. This dense, chocolatey wine will need time to develop a little more nuance and grace. It offers excellent potential but is already quite flattering.

Tasted at the Medoc UGC. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot, picked from 18th September (young Merlot vines) until 8th October. The La Lagune has a limpid purple/black colour. The nose is very tight at first, unfurling nicely with aeration to reveal succulent blackberry, bilberry, a fleeting scent of estuary mudflats that segues into more vanillary aromas from the oak. The palate hits all the right buttons: superbly balanced with fine but sturdy tannins, great clarity and focus, the minerality and sense of tension brimming over the finish. Good length. This is an assured, confident La Lagune that will be an absolute pleasure after bottling. Tasted March 2010.

Purple red, lovely Cabernet cassis nose, already pure and quite forward, silky texture with savoury, almost lush fruit that really enrobes the tannins, fresh and harmonious and will evolve beautifully. Drink 2014-24.

I don’t think anyone could possibly rate this higher than the 2005, which is certainly the greatest wine made at this estate since 1982. However, this is another blockbuster, gorgeously aromatic, with notes of subtle oak interwoven with perfumed black, blue, and red fruits. Its opaque purple color, the gorgeous elegance allied to compelling intensity of flavor, and its full-bodied opulence make for the quintessential expression of this terroir. This is beauty that will be relatively approachable in 3-4 years and evolve for 20 or more years. (Tasted three times.) Drink 2013-2033.

The deeply-rimmed, saturated inky-purple colored La Lagune is brilliant. It boasts fabulous perfumes of white flower, blueberry liqueur, raw meat residue, cassis, and crushed-minerals. This is unbelievable quality for a Southern Médoc offering a full-bodied, dense, muscular, spilled-ink flavor of cassis and minerals. This provides for a loaded, crammed extract of impeccably ripe fruit. It will certainly offer collectors and extended cellar life partly due to its old-school, backward-style. A wine of complex seared meat flavor infused with blackberry. Certainly, it is one of the biggest surprises of the vintage. Spectacular! Maturity period 2017-2037

Floral and precise fruit, with blackberry-skin character and mineral undertones. Full-bodied, with superfine tannins and a fresh, clean finish. Long and tight. Racy. Lovely texture. 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 percent Merlot and 15 percent Petit Verdot. This property is really on a roll now, delivering racy and structured reds; it gives much more freshness and character to the wine.

It was difficult to taste this as it was not shown in the UGC tastings unfortunately. Very dark. Very ethereal notes on the nose. Thick and sweet and with notes a little more plastic and winemaking than real substance, earthiness and vineyard. SO sweet! There must have been so many decisions involved in making this wine but it is not, in the end, a refreshing drink. Too thick, too sweet, too harsh and drying on the end. Shame. Picked too late? Very ungracious, I’m afraid. Although winemaker Caroline Frey, who takes a great deal of care in winemaking, assures me that her grapes were in fact picked much earlier than at many properties. Perhaps they were just too concentrated? I certainly look forward to tasting this again later in its life. Drink 2015-2020
