Castle of Tertre - Margaux 2013

Marked by strong weather characteristics, 2013 will remain a vintage of all efforts with a permanent work in the vineyard coupled with great vigilance by the technical teams to carry out this vintage. A winter outing and a rather mild but rainy beginning of pritemps resulted in normal bud burst and rapid growth of the vine. The months of March and April proved to be relatively dry in the same way as the heart of the summer season. Thus the months of July and August rather warm globally allowed to develop a slow but late maturation of the grapes before the return of a few rains in the very end of summer. The "work in green" and our regular and meticulous application on the vine will allow us to make the best of the climatic conditions. So that our terroir can express itself at best. A major difficulty of the vintage was to preserve the health status of the harvest while attaining the essential maturity to harvest. The particular delicate situation this year necessitated simultaneous consideration of all parameters of vines and climatology. Thanks to precise logistics and careful human management of the grape harvesters, the two properties (Giscours and Tertre) were able to harvest by a remarkable selection. The different sorts, vines, tble and optics were essential with the objective to spread any bay not corresponding to our demanding criteria.

The 2013 du Tertre has a light, pencil lead bouquet that is calling out for more fruit. It disconcertingly loses some vigor in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with tart cherry fruit on the entry, quite high acidity with a raw and abrasive finish. There are much better wines in recent vintages, but you probably know that already. Also tasted at the château in March 2016 with consistent notes.

A tangy and fresh red with plum, berry and coffee aromas and flavors. Medium body, fine tannins and crisp finish. Drink now.

A possible sleeper of the vintage, this 2013 possesses plenty of licorice, black currant, underbrush and white chocolate aromas, medium body, sweet, pure, black currant flavors, very good to excellent concentration, and a long finish. Consume it over the next 10+ years.

Medium ruby-red.  Expressive aromas of plum, raspberry, aromatic herbs and coffee show a pungent leafy quality.  Then much riper in the mouth, with silky, intense wild berry flavors displaying noteworthy sweetness and precision.  Offers excellent fruit intensity and volume for the year.  Persistent red berry nuances and substantial, slightly hard tannins coat the palate at the back.

Very dull and almost smoky /peaty on the nose. Not ripe enough and the fruit is muted and lifeless. Not impressive

Sweet black cherry fruit, then a dilute palate. Very straightforward, with accessible, softened tannins and refreshing acid.

Grilled herbs, smoke, game, tobacco and earthiness are some of the notes that inform the 2013 Chateau du Tertre. Although quite pretty in the glass, the 2013 lacks depth and mid-palate presence, something that may become more accentuated over time.

Beaucoup de droiture, nez floral bien margalais, corps un rien étroit et quelques notes de poivron rouge liées à la nature des cabernets, tannin un peu sec, mais finale franche, assurée, prometteuse. Il devrait s’étoffer en barrique.

The du Tertre has a focused bouquet of red berries and rose petals, nicely defined even if it does lack intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry. It is missing finesse and delineation, although it does have satisfactory length.

Deep colour and quite lifted cassis fruit, good natural ripeness and nice  structure and length.

This is really excellent for the vintage. A beautiful wine with berry, hints of hazelnut and chocolate. Medium body, fine tannins and a savory finish. The warmer soils in Tertre helped combat the coolness of 2013.

Direct, with a polished feel to the plum and bing cherry fruit. Finish is inlaid with modest red licorice and sweet spice notes. —J.M.

This wine is ripe, full of blackberry flavors and tannins that are well integrated into the natural fruitiness of the wine. It is going to be an attractive wine for medium-term consumption.
