Castle Pointe - Pomerol 2014

The color is deep with reflections of violins. The nose is very pure, is filled with black fruits slightly spiced. The mouth is first suave and round, juicy, then densifies, offering a beautiful structure. The tannins are tight, in place, very integrated. The fresh and aerial finish is carried by the Cabernet Francs which come to give persistence and complexity.

A juicy, exuberant wine, the 2014 La Pointe offers plenty of succulent fruit in an open-knit style that is sure to find many admirers. Sweet dark cherries, spices, mint, cedar and new leather wrap around the creamy, super-expressive finish.

The Château La Pointe 2014 is a blend of 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc (due to the uprooting of Merlot in the vineyard). Eric Monneret told me that during the September rain the skins did not break, but prudently picked any suspect bunches earlier in September for the second wine. It has an elegant bouquet, quite refined and pure with dark cherries and violet scents, classier than the vintages of old. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite feminine and elegant on the entry. It feels linear in the mouth, refusing to fan out on the finish that leaves you wanting just a little more after the attractive aromatics. Not a bad La Pointe, but not quite top tier this year.

A full bodied, intense Pomerol that is concentrated and fairly dense with elevated, firm tannins. This wine needs at least 5 to 7 years to open up but all the elements are here for a very good wine that will age well over the next decade.

Fragrant berry and vanilla aromas. Palate round, supple and fruit driven. Juicy on attack but backed by a firm tannic frame. Just a touch hard on the finish. Drink: 2018-2028 (88)

Lustrous crimson. Aggressive sweet oak. Sweetly charming on the palate entry and then too much extraction. Sinewy but there is a bit of a hole in the middle.

A little lean but some good bright berry and chocolate character. Medium body, fresh finish.

17/20 2023 – 2036

87–89. Barrel Sample. A powerful, solid wine that shows weight in the way of big tannins. It is dense and almost excessive in its richness.

A toasted, showy style, with layers of warmed vanilla bean and fruitcake out front, backed by fleshy plum sauce and red licorice notes. Should be a crowdpleaser.
