The 2018 Cap de Faugères feels a little flat on the nose at first; it does not exactly leap from the glass like some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, sweet tannins, pretty red cherry, kirsch and soy notes, although again, it lacks some joie-de-vivre toward the finish.

The 2018 Cap de Faugères is composed of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon; harvest began on September 22. Deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with intense scents of preserved plums, kirsch, chocolate box and menthol with hints of woodsmoke and Indian spices. Full-bodied, rich and voluptuously fruited in the mouth, the palate has a velvety texture and plenty of red fruit sparks of freshness, finishing spicy.

Attractive blackberry and blueberry character with hints of spice and white pepper. Medium-to full-bodied. Quite tannic. One of best Cap de Faugères I have had.

This has a gorgeous violet edging to the colour with clear oak influence, veering to smoky and working well. There is a clear tightening through the mid palate, as you would expect from the limestone soils, but it will soften over ageing and they have captured plenty of juice running through the blueberry and blackberry fruits. The Denz estates in general have been successful in 2018.
